The Wausau Fire Department has 60 members and all are trained to perform multiple tasks. A typical member is trained to perform duties of:
- a Fire Fighter
- an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic
- a Hazardous Materials Response Technician
- an Emergency Vehicle Operator
- a Technical Rescuer
- and Fire Inspector.

- Utilizing 24 pieces of apparatus that include: 4 pumpers, 2 aerial ladders, 5 ambulances, 5 automobiles/vans, 1 heavy rescue vehicle, 1 hazardous materials incident command vehicle, 1 hazardous materials equipment trailer, 1 decontamination vehicle, 1 all-terrain vehicle, 1 brush truck, 1 public fire education tractor/trailer, and 3 rescue boats.
- Providing fire protection to 2 communities serving 53,000 people within an area of 40.2 square miles.
- Providing emergency medical services (EMS) to 7 communities serving 47,800 people in an area of 243 square miles.
