Wausau Police Department Explorer Post #0442
In 2005, the Wausau Police Department’s Explorer Post became active once again. The Explorer Post gives youth, between the ages of 15-21, a chance to experience a career in law enforcement. The members of the post receive training in traffic stops, verbal communication, hostage negotiations, firearms, and first aid. The Explorers ride with officers during the officer’s work shift.
The Wausau Police Department Explorer Post has volunteered at many events including parades, WI Special Olympics Polar Plunge, and roadside garbage pick up.
In 2007, the Wausau Police Explorer Post teamed with Kronenwetter Police Department to better serve the youth in the post. Kronenwetter Police Department provided an advisor for the post and also supports the efforts of the post.
In July of 2008, a team of four explorers went to the National Law Enforcement Conference, in Colorado. The team scored in the top ten percent in the hostage negation competition. They had participated against approximately 60 teams in the event. During the conference they were joined by over 300 posts from around the nation and by high ranking officials from many federal law enforcement agencies.
